‘Early Aviation in Monmouth County, New Jersey by George Joynson’ Book Review

Born and raised in Philadelphia, I knew that I was most likely going to enjoy this book, based solely upon a “hometown” type of pride. You see, while those from Philadelphia, PA and those from New Jersey laugh at one another across the Ben Franklin, we have a long-standing bond akin to that of ornery siblings. I also have a deep love of history, so I knew that “Early Aviation in Monmouth County, New Jersey by George Joynson” was either going to be dry and distasteful or intriguing and delicious. I can happy report that the book is the latter.

If you enjoy aviation, if you enjoy history, then this is an absolute must read. What you’ll find inside this book is page after page of interesting facts about aviation during the time period of 1908-1930. However, the author takes the reader on a journey from a personal perspective sharing the lives of the pioneers of aviation. The book is filled with photos, illustrations and pictures of documents that give the reader a true feel of what it was like to be involved in aviation during early 20th century. My only issue with “Early Aviation in Monmouth County, New Jersey by George Joynson” is that it is currently available in paperback and I can’t help but think that this book would make an exceptional coffee table book.

‘Martin Chitwood's Influence of English Common Law’ Review

This 86-page look at the cultural influences of English Common Law and how it has been applied to West Africa leaves the reader with a solid pause for thought. As you begin to read “Martin Chitwood's Influence of English Common Law,” directly out of the gate Chitwood examines the dynamics of English law and the massive cultural differences of the Sub-Saharan African people.

This is not a “law” book per se. For this reader, it was an interesting view at how an establish system of law effects social change and society as a whole. The book, at 86-pages, is obviously a brief read. But there is no lack of interest and I was left with a lot to think about. It is a highly enjoyable read for anyone who bothers to look beyond their own back yard and attempts to understand the intricate dynamics of our world as a global citizen. On that fact alone, I place is as a must-read!

Book Review: ‘Great Taste No Pain’ by Sherry Brescia

I absolutely believe that everything happens for a reason and that things come into our lives exactly when they’re supposed to. Until a little over a year ago I’d never had digestive or intestinal issues and then around last April … it all began. I began to experience bloating, indigestion and intestinal issues.

My father passed away from colon cancer so I was absolutely terrified. So terrified that I opted to ignore my discomfort until it all became too much. In the end (no pun intended) I was diagnosed with IBS and the doctor attempted to put me on meds for which I refused and which brings me to my point.

I believe that many of our ills can be alleviated through proper nutrition. However, I am not trained in any nutritional sciences and often turn to “Dr. Google” which is not always the best sources of information. And then, I was asked to review “Great Taste No Pain” by Sherry Brescia. Initially, I thought that the book was about weight-loss and wasn’t especially thrilled to review it. Never judge a book by its cover!

With more than 1 out of 3 adults in the United States (70 million) taking over the counter or prescription pills for digestive disorders and the pain associated with them, as a nation, we have serious health problems. Sherry, a previous IBS suffer herself, takes the reader through an intense yet easy to understand crash course on the science of food combining. The first 72 pages of this 220-page book are dedicated to understanding the proper way to food combine and how to painlessly integrate this type of eating into your life. Oh, are you asking, “What is food combining?”

Food combining is a very simple theory that leads to pain free digestion and better absorption of nutrients. For example, when you combine steak (protein), which requires an acidic stomach with a potato (starch), which requires an alkaline stomach, you throw your whole digestive system into disorder. This makes perfect sense and the way in which Sherry explains proper food combining is so incredibly simple that anyone can understand it and that anyone can painlessly adapt to.

Aside from a thorough crash course in food combining, Great Taste No Pain is a cookbook with over 100 recipes for all occasions. And you don’t need “special” ingredients to make these delicious recipes. Great Taste No Pain is not an overhaul of your current diet, it’s a makeover and one that your gut will thank you for! Great Taste No Pain sells for $39.97 at Holistic Blends, but the nice folks at HB are offering readers a 15% coupon code: hbaf2015 and the code does not expire.

Second Suns Book Review

“Second Suns,” released June 18, 2013 is a crash course in humanity delivered as an adventurous tale. The book captures the joy of thousands of patients whose sight is restored with a 10-minute procedure, draws attention to dangerous issues within the medical community that fails us and leaves us with infectious inspiration to do more with our lives.

This book is written by “Three Cups of Tea” co-author David Oliver Relin. “Second Suns” is the true-life story of two very dissimilar doctors. Serving with the same spirit. In “Second Suns,” we are introduced to Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoffrey Tabin who are born a world apart and brought together in brotherhood to eradicate preventable blindness that is prevalent throughout the world’s developing countries.

“Second Suns” takes the reader from the remote village of Olangchungola, the birthplace of Dr. Ruit, where as a boy of 7, he and his father trekked for 15 days to deliver Ruit to the closest school. It flashes to the privileged life of an obnoxious, over indulged, Ivy Leaguer named Geoff Tabin. How these two men meet and partner in the creation of the Himalayan Cataract Project, is told by Relin in such a way that I was unable to put the book down.

David Oliver Relin died in November 2012. Relin’s author’s note reads: “Some books you want to write. Others you have to write.” It is the opinion of Pop Culture Shock that “Second Suns” is one of those books that you have to read! “Second Suns” ($27) is published by Random House and is available at the website.
