Reality TV In Reality Sucks

Cast of Real World circa 1992
TMZ has reported that Jenelle Evans of ‘16 and Pregnant’ and ‘Teen Mom 2’ Reality TV fame has been arrested for breaking probation. The apparent Lindsay Lohan wannabe will appear in court on August 24th. Tick-tock...how long before the real Lindsay will be back in court? Yes, as usual, I digress.

Reality television started with MTV’s ‘The Real World: New York’ in 1992 and it seemed like a fairly interesting experiment. The tagline for the show was “watch what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.” And the show seemed to deliver on its tagline, maybe making the rest of us feel a little less crazy.

Born from that first reality show in 1992 have been too many shows to mention and the public has gotten a far too personal, and definitely skewed, view of the daily lives of strangers.

Topping the list of purely bad T.V. is ‘Teen Mom.’ What is the value in this type of show? It surely is not intended to educate or deter teen pregnancy and in the end it makes “stars” out of the idiotic girls who participate in the show. In essence, ‘Teen Mom’ glamorizes teen pregnancy by the shear fact that the girls on the show earn a certain amount of celebrity. Unfortunately, reality television is a pop culture trend for which there is no end in sight.
