Assassination of Pancho Villa Explored On 90th Anniversary


Discovery en Español will premiere of “El asesinato de Villa: la conspiración,” which is a riveting documentary about the July 20, 1923 death of General Francisco “Pancho” Villa. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Emilio Maillé, the original Discovery en Español production analyzes the historic events that outlined the assassination of one of the Mexican Revolution’s most controversial leaders.

Francisco “Pancho” Villa was born Doroteo Arango on June 5, 1878 to a sharecropper in San Juan del Rio, Mexico. Villa’s father died when he was 15-years-old and one year later, Villa would commit murder while attempting to protect his 12-year-old sister from being rapped. In 1894 Villa fled from prosecution, began his life as a bandit and as one of the most iconic symbols in Mexican history.

“El asesinato de Villa: la conspiración” explores the happenings of that fateful July day. It is well know, that as an active revolutionary, General Villa made many enemies. But who exactly killed him and was Villa’s assassination an act of personal or political revenge? The documentary aims to answers these questions as it presents classified information and new evidence surrounding the motives of the July 20, 1923 murder.

With dramatizations and opinions of renowned experts, including writer and filmmaker Guillermo Arriaga and historians Jesús Vargas Valdés, Antonio Campuzano and Dr. Jane Dale Lloyd, the documentary will present new evidence about this historic event. “El asesinato de Villa: la conspiración” will premiere on the 90th anniversary of General Francisco “Pancho” Villa’s death at 8 p.m., July 20 on Discovery en Español.
