Mark Harmon joins Stand Up To Cancer and the Cancer Research Institute

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) announced June 13, that Mark Harmon star of “NCIS” is lending his support to SU2C and the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) via a new PSA. The PSA, “I Am My Own Secret Weapon,” focuses on cancer immunotherapy.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that one in two men and one in three women will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lifetime. Further statistics show that nearly 1,600 Americans die from cancer everyday. Research for alternative therapies is essential and through Harmon’s PSA, the organizations hope to increase awareness about the need to support more research on immune-based cancer treatments.

What is immunotherapy? This type of cancer treatment utilizes manipulation of the body’s immune system to specifically target and attacker cancer. But, cancer immunotherapy treatment is still in need of more research. In December 2012, SU2C and CRI announced the formation of a Cancer Immunology Translational Research Dream Team, dedicated to exploring the complex relationship between cancer and the immune system. With $10 million in funding over a three-year period, this project will unite laboratory and clinical efforts to work toward the goal of discovering immune-based solutions to fight cancer.
